What is the best PC tuner card and FREE DVR software? Thinking about ditching cable and or DISH for a nice HD antenna for free TV. I however would still like to record shows, but have no DVR. I understand a PC tuner card could act like a DVR. What one would your recommend, and do you know of some free software that would allow me to set recording of certain shows at certain times? needadvice? replied: "im tryin to find the same thing..."

I have some DVR software installed on a PC I leave on all the time (BeyondTV if you need to know). I schedule many shows to download, but mostly in the evenings or at night. Can I tell Windows XP to turn off my hard drives after 15 minutes of inactivity? Will Windows turn the hard drive back on when my DVR software starts to record a show (and subsequently convert the recording to DivX)?
I'm basically just worried that if I tell Windows to turn off my hard drives, they won't be turned back on when the software wants to use them. Wouldn't be much point to automatically recording my shows if I had to move the mouse around just to get the hard drives spinning. farrengottu replied: "yes you can set it to that and windows will turn it back on but you will get a delayed recording. only by how long it takes for the drives to start up. normally like 5 seconds.

I can't use it on my Vista machine but I am running 64 bit. If you have 32 bit Vista I believe you can use it O.K.

The only other decent free DVR software out there would be MediaPortal. You can find it at. I haven't had much luck with these free apps. If you were to buy one, I would suggest Beyond TV v4 from or you can wait for the release of Microsoft Windows Vista, which will have PVR capabilities in the Home Premium version. Make sure your system can handle the new OS, if this is what you decide to do."
